<p>I figured that other Great things will happen to me while in town this week. And it certainly has been great! Incredible as a matter of fact. Full of music and great food. Great company. Family. Friends. </p>

<p>We only hear what we want to. We only hear what we are ready to listen to.</p>
<p>I think this is why yoga and fitness students are able to, or want to go to the same teachers for many years. Week after week. They hear something new. Or at least they think it’s New, but only because they are ready to listen.</p>
<p>Try to listen more. It May save your Body (knees, hips, shoulders). It may save your Relationships. Your Life.</p>

<p>It is to recognize that money isn’t everything. Sure it makes the world go ‘round. Sure it’s nice not to have to worry about having enough money. But whenever you do have enough, Notice it. Be grateful for it. Don’t flaunt it.</p>

<p>I wrote this song missing Portugal and all it had to offer. I fell in love. I had one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. And then it was gone. Just like that!</p>

<p>When your heart is broken, you feel EVERY THING. You live in the moment. Every tear feels like eternity. Every breath so confusing and hard to let go. But I also knew that life goes on. Life Will go on without THAT piece you miss.</p>

<p>For the last couple of days, my students and I have been opting to practice on our backs the entire time. It’s amazing how much work we can do on our backs.</p>
<p>My legs sometimes work harder on my back. </p>
<p>Anyway, I had a student who suffers from arthritis. In the middle of our mat yoga, she started wiggling her fingers. Her arthritis subsided for the most part. </p>
<p>We love yoga! </p>

<p>I just booked a ticket to China to fly out in 5 days. It took me a week to make it happen. And today, a student just made me realize that I would need a Visa. Yikes!</p>
<p>So I’m on the internet looking for a way to get one quickly. </p>
<p>I have talked about going to China. And here I am days away from making it happen. The opportunity presented itself and I’m GOING!</p>

But she came to class with the purpose of bringing them to me.<br>That evening I closed out the class with the subject of Detachment. <br>She then admitted after class that Zumba allows her to just go with the flow. <br>“Yoga is tougher”, she said. She would have to face her demons. She would have to face the energy of people.<br>That was why she hasn’t been to yoga. <br>I understood. <br>Our individual energies are so vibrant. Evident.</p>

<p>I recognize that how people act and respond toward me, especially if they don’t know me, has nothing to do with me at all.</p>
<p>So what exactly are we reacting to? </p>
<p>When our peace is disturbed, we must ask ourselves this questions. WHAT AM I REACTING TO?</p>
<p>Maybe understanding this will bring Back our peace. </p>
<p>I drive a whole lot, and sometimes, I get bothered by impolite, or just plain rude drivers. And my peace Is disturbed. But why shall I let a person I don’t even know disturb my PEACE? </p>
<p>We do this ALL THE TIME. We give our Peace taken away. We trash it. Stash it. Forget about it. Let it go. </p>
<p>In yoga philosophy, PEACE is our true nature. Inner Silence. Inner Bliss. Inner Love. </p>
<p>This is why we practice yoga. This is why we love to play sports. Or eat. Or make love. Pray. Listen to music. </p>
<p>Stop giving away Peace. Stop letting it go. Just Stop.</p>

<p>I’m on my third book on the Enneagram and I feel that I still have much to learn and discover. Not just about other people, but about myself.</p>
<p>I feel that the more I know, the more I have to learn. The more I need to understand — how truly different we all are. </p>
<p>It has been a journey looking into other people’s (plus my own) behaviors. </p>
<p>Recognizing the way I do things, has (and will) help me become better at what I do and the way I treat others. The way I think, or not think. The way I feel, or sometimes, not feel.</p>

<p>Happy 1st of July!</p>
<p>I fell biking the path from Santa Monica beach to Venice. I was going way too fast on a turn with much sand on the path. I got all scratched up as I slid through the fall. I’m well aware that it could have gone much worse. </p>
<p>Soon after I got back on my bike and started riding again, the front rider of a tandem bike was still lying with the bike sideways on the sandy concrete suffering from her injuries. I hope she didn’t hurt herself too badly. </p>
<p>I write about this because I actually didn’t mind the fall and dressing my wounds. </p>
<p>Maybe I needed it to keep me PRESENT. </p>
<p>I love being near the ocean. Soaking up the energy of nature. I love seeing everyone doing the same. But maybe I wasn’t doing that as much as I could have. </p>
<p>The fall allowed me to be more present. In my body. Attending to my arm, wrist, knuckles, palm. My knees and shins. My left shoulder. Right shoulder. </p>
<p>The accident missed my face but I still tended to it. I was grateful I didn’t get my face all scratched up and my sunglasses were still intact. </p>
<p>Today was a great day! I hope yours was too.</p>

<p>Every yoga/meditation class is different. And I realize that if ever, one day, the classes I teach become one in the same, it may be time for me to stop teaching. <br>I go into a class with an open mind, open heart, open soul. I let the people there and their cumulative energy guide their practice. It is THEIR practice after all. Not mine.<br>I allow changes. I risk. I have Faith that all with be as they should. That all will get what they need at that very moment. <br>The “Restorative Yoga” workshop I taught ended up to be, as my dear friend put it: an EXTENDED SHAVASANA (RELAXATION POSE).<br>For an hour and a half, they laid on their backs (fully sported of course) while I spoke, chanted, sang. <br>I must have tried at least 5 times to get them to move so that we could do other restorative poses. I gently optioned for them to move their fingers and toes. But at the same time, I mentioned that it was OK for them to stay where they were if they were Content. <br>And they were: CONTENT.<br>That is the goal of the physical practices of yoga: Contentment. So why should I move them away from where they were already. </p>

<p>This coming Sunday I am teaching “Restorative Yoga”. Tons of props are used: several blankets / yoga mats, yoga blocks, bolsters, even chairs. </p>
<p>Essential oils. </p>

<p>With this type of yoga, our body’s innate relaxation response is activated. Emerging feeling centered, at ease, calmer, peaceful.</p>

<p>As I have mentioned before, I have not owned a television for I do not know how long (though I do get on Netflix when I can). I do not watch or listen to the news. I get my news from everyone around me, which is a less depressing way to get it.</p>
<p>Today, I had 2 people tell me that companies are putting PLASTIC on rice. On food?! Plastic?! To make it look better? Fluffier? </p>
<p>For Money and Power: Our Health is compromised. </p>
<p>We need to take our concern for the public, for the world, for the universe, a few notches up. What is happening to us? </p>
<p>Greed will not make us happy. Greed will not bring us peace and contentment. Putting plastic on food you sell, will not give you what you REALLY need. </p>
<p>Let’s take a moment to dig deep within and recognize what it IS we really need. And what it IS that will truly give us what we need.</p>

<p>I just had a student come up to me after class and tell me he has stage 4 lung cancer. He did not at all look like he had cancer because he’s young, maybe in his 40’s, and very capable in yoga class. He said that there are only a few people he has told. He was diagnosed about a year and a half ago and some of his friends still do not know. </p>
<p>His state of mind truly amazed me. </p>
<p>He wanted to know more about breathing exercises and meditation. I was more than happy to prescribe just that. </p>
<p>Call me naive but I do think there’s much hope for him. He seems to be doing so well, despite his diagnosis. It seems he’s eating well too, and really trying his best to keep what he has left, and of course improve what he can. </p>
<p>I had an uncle just pass away this year from stomach cancer. The doctors gave him 5 years to live about 15 years ago. And I was privileged to introduce some breathing exercises to him. HE LOVED IT! And he Stopped taking some very pricey medication because of Kapalabati. So here is the video again.</p>
<p>He couldn’t stop raving how effective it was. How it relieved his pain. He was able to eat a lot more because of it. And he was Thrilled to EAT. </p>
<p>Take care of yourself. In all ways you can.</p>

<p>“Kapala” means “Skull” in sanskrit. “Bhati” means “Shining”.</p>
<p>Kapalabati is one of the main breathing exercises that I practice. Every day. First thing in the morning. </p>
<p>It cleanses the entire system, thus, makes the face Shine with Good Health and Radiance. It is also energizing because it increases the oxygen to the brain. It refreshes and invigorates the mind in preparation, either for a busy day, or right into Meditation. </p>
<p>Physical benefits include:</p>
<p>Cleanses nasal passage, lungs, and entire respiratory system.</p>
<p>Increases capacity of the lungs.</p>
<p>Strengthens ribcage muscles.</p>
<p>Helps drain sinuses.</p>
<p>The movement of the diaphragm and abdominal contractions massage the stomach, spleen, heart, pancreas.</p>

<p>I will never forget the day he spoke of me “Writing” as if I had already written a book. I was only in high school. I dedicate my first book to him because he Knew I could write before I ever did.</p>
<p>He expressed to my very first modeling agent that I have “Something Special” when I’m up on stage. I had no idea before then how he felt about me modeling.</p>
<p>I can go on and on about his gentle and giving heart, not just to the family, but to everyone around him. I can go on about his other various talents and gifts. About the way he beautifully carried himself in our home and beyond. </p>
<p>How I know that he is always there even without words. How he understood the reasons for my actions even without me saying a word. </p>
<p>I know how Blessed I am to have such a Father. I know how Blessed I am to still have him around. I thank God every year. Every Day.</p>

<p>This Sunday I will be singing and chanting during a yoga class outdoors. I will be singing in both English and Sanskrit.</p>
<p>Sanskrit is gaining its importance with universities across the globe. It is one, if not THE oldest language. It is where many, and again, if not ALL languages come from. This is probably why it is such a powerful language. </p>
<p>It touches (or stimulates) the centers of energy that move inside us (Chakras). That is why, even though we don’t understand it, when we listen or sing it, we are affected in the most profound way.</p>

<p>Letting Go is difficult. </p>
<p>But even of things we Don’t use? Or don’t even Like that much? It’s a continuous struggle. That is why I am very careful of what I bring into my home. </p>
<p>Are we buying way TOO many things? Spending way too much money because we want others to like and accept us?</p>
<p>Joshua Becker, writer of <em>The More Of Less </em>says that:</p>

<p>On my way to class this morning, I thought of a student/peer who had not gone into a headstand again ever since she first got all the way up all by herself about a month ago. I hadn’t been inclined to mention it. Though I have wondered, class after class. </p>
<p>But of course, when she walked in this morning, I blurted, “How come you haven’t been going up in a headstand?”. </p>
<p>“I don’t know”, she answered.</p>
<p>When it was time for Inversions, I watched as she Steadily, Gracefully, Intently, and Confidently went up-side-down. She went through ALL 8-steps as if she had been doing it for years. </p>
<p>“You just had to say it.” She commented after class.</p>
<p>I guess Someone had to say it.</p>

<p>Everything seems to always work out. And even if they don’t work out as planned, I think in the end, we’ll be in perfect harmony. </p>
<p>It was supposed to rain this morning. Reports said that there was 80 percent chance of rain from 8 to 10 this Sunday morning (and class was 8:30-9:30 am). </p>
<p>It drizzled a few times, but in the end, we had a joyous yoga practice in the middle of loads of greenery. </p>
<p>The temperature was perfect. I welcomed the drops of water hitting my body.</p>
<p>We looked up at the blue sky, instead of a ceiling. We felt the wind in our skin. We inhaled fresh air. Shavasana (Relaxation pose) was so grounding, laying down outstretched, touching the earth.</p>

<p>It’s Magic that yesterday, at 4:43 in the afternoon, my 8-year-old niece said “Hi” to me over text. She also informed me that she’s listening to “Fight Song by Rachel Platten”. </p>
<p>I love that she even names the artist. I think she’s also musically inclined.</p>
<p>Then she concludes her string of texts with a video of herself blowing me a kiss after drawing a heart via phone graphics.</p>
<p>That’s my version Magic! And SHE is a Miracle to me.</p>

<p>It’s hard to fly (or go anywhere at all) when things are weighing us down. </p>
<p>Today, Let Go of judgements. Or even just one. Then FLY.</p>
<p>See what happens when you fly. Tell me how it felt.</p>
<p>I have let go of any judgements toward yoga students who come to class and do What they want to do and When they want to do them — During Class. </p>
<p>Yes: they come and pay and practice in a class setting, and then do other postures while everyone else is doing the posture the teacher is instructing. And then yes, the same student tells you at the end of class how Wonderful it was.</p>
<p>I have a student like that who comes on a monthly basis. </p>
<p>Obviously it isn’t just the teacher who is Baffled by this behavior. The other students as well. Especially the few who practice in close vicinity to them. </p>
<p>I have learned to not take anything personally, especially behaviors from people whom I do not know personally. </p>
<p>I may not agree with such behaviors, but I surely do not need to be offended by them. At least not for long. I try to let them be. Let it be.</p>

<p>To Explore the “Warrior in Us”. </p>
<p>Explore the WARRIOR in YOU.</p>
<p>These postures stretch and strengthen upper and lower body, as well as improve Balance.</p>
<p>But more importantly, they help discover Courage, Perseverance, and Self-empowerment.</p>
<p>They teach us to stand strong On and Off our mats. Just as we strive to stand strong in the highest Truth of who we are, which in yoga philosophy is Peace, Love, Bliss, Divinity. </p>
<p>In This particular ‘Reverse Warrior’ pose (Viparita Virabhadrasana), we gaze Upward, as if toward our Potential. We also reach back for support. We are thus, encouraged to call upon the Tools (meditation, self-inquiry, a regular hatha yoga practice, prayer) we need to navigate the Ego (which causes All our pain and suffering).</p>

<p>I believe that one of the reasons we love to practice yoga is because we are barefooted. </p>
<p>A yoga instructor colleague once said during class, “I get to work barefoot! It can’t get better than that!"</p>
<p>Wearing shoes all the time results in weaker feet, and possibly injuries. </p>
<p>Our feet consist of so many nerve endings. Practicing barefoot connects different parts, points, and nerve ending with the floor. The movement of our joints, points and muscles leads to stronger feet.</p>
<p>Walk around barefoot more. </p>
<p>And when I don’t get to, I wear one of my Vibram 5-fingers shoes.</p>

<p>I went for dental cleaning today and since I had a new hygienist, I asked her what she thought about ‘oil-pulling’.</p>
<p>Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique/remedy that involves swishing <strong>oil</strong> in your mouth for around 20 minutes. This is supposed to draws out toxins in your body, primarily to promote oral health. </p>
<p>I have incorporated oil pulling into my daily oral hygiene routine for years now. And have continually suggested it to others. </p>
<p>Personally, my dental visits have proven it is doing something for me. Plus, when I would miss some days of not doing it, while traveling, and I recognize that I Should be doing it.</p>
<p>But the hygienist today, did not have the same opinion as I. She dismissed it completely.</p>
<p>Her point was that: she can barely get her patients (let alone her husband) to brush and floss for 2 minutes. I totally get that.</p>
<p>She did, however, suggest ‘teeth and gum tonic’ which you could buy at some dental offices and definitely online for $35. It is made up of organically grown herbs and pure essential oils. Though, lately, I have been adding clove and peppermint essential oils to my oil pulling.</p>
<p>One of these days I may dish out 35 bucks for an 18 ounce bottle, which would last for 6 months.</p>
<p>Organic oil is not cheap either. Plus, I think, the tonic, you only have to swish around for 30 seconds twice a day.</p>

<p>It’s amazing to see kids achieve so much at such a young age. All around me are bright youngsters getting into Ivy League schools. </p>
<p>Nowadays, it doesn’t seem to be enough to just get a Bachelor’s degree anymore. </p>
<p>Do higher education and great achievements necessarily translate to an extraordinary life?</p>
<p>But the more important question to me is: Are they at Peace? Do they know how to find Joy in the simple things? How to handle sorrow and loss? How to live a Truly extraordinary life? </p>
<p>What is an extraordinary life anyway? What are we asking our children to do? Are we teaching them the way to a stressful life instead of just finding the Wonder, the Marvel in the ordinary?</p>
<p>How about we show them the ‘joy of tasting tomatoes or apples’?</p>
<p>How about we show them ‘how to cry when pets die or people die’?</p>
<p>How about showing them ‘the infinite pleasure in the touch of a hand’?</p>
<p>How about we ‘allow them, and us, to make the ordinary come alive’?</p>
<p>The extraordinary takes care of itself. </p>
<p>Living in the now IS extraordinary.</p>
<p>Living in appreciation of the simple things IS extraordinary.</p>

<p>Students sometimes tell me about other yoga instructors. I realize that some teachers use (or see) teaching as an opportunity for therapy, for themselves. They talk about their current issues/hardships IN class. </p>
<p>Maybe they hope that others could learn from their situation. Though others may just be so self-involved that all they can manage is the situation in their own lives (and heads), even DURING class. </p>
<p>Students come to yoga for peace and serenity, or so I think. We do not need to constantly know about the teacher’s problems, no matter how comedic. </p>
<p>Today, the teacher I went to, was just that. </p>
<p>All she could talk about was the party she was having at her house in the afternoon. </p>
<p>I understand it’s stressful to be having 60 people over in a matter of hours. I understand how stressful it may be to have your in-laws flying in an hour. (Though having relatives and friends come and party is a Gift. I would find excitement in that more than anything.)</p>
<p>She said that she decided, teaching was what she needed that morning. She called it “the calm before the storm”. </p>
<p>Fine. But can I still have my peace and serenity?</p>
<p>Even during our final Shavasana (relaxation) she told an entire story of her pain last Monday. </p>
<p>Maybe others were inspired. I hope others were inspired.</p>

<p>A yoga student this morning mentioned that she has been working with “Families Helping Families”, whose purpose is to help homeless families in Dupage County, Illinois. They provide apartments and supportive services to homeless families while they are working to reclaim their lives.</p>
<p>She had many inspiring stories. But the one that touched her heart that week was a woman who gave up her spot so that some other family, who need it more, could get into the program. </p>
<p>Giving is a vicious cycle. When we give whole-heartedly to someone in need, they, in turn, feel the need to give just the same. </p>
<p>I’m sure there are programs like this near you.</p>

Too often, seniors find themselves in the scenario of going from one doctor’s appointment to the next and taking handfuls of prescription drugs in a precarious attempt to manage their health. And without sufficient resources, many fall through the cracks of a healthcare system weighed down by corporate greed and a lack of vision for preventative care.</p>
<p>We need to re-learn ways of self-care; to become more tuned to what we can do for ourselves and for each other to feel better and to live better. </p>

<p>I accept life that way too. More and more and more, every day… I don’t need to know the reasons for everything. And maybe the reasons aren’t even that important. All I need to do is love.</p>

<p>Again, I saw many who do Not have a headstand practice (some who have never even tried to do a headstand) stand on their heads today with much Courage.</p>
<p>“Overcoming the fear of being on our heads”.</p>
<p>Headstand is much like the Mountain Pose, just up-side-down. The whole body is in alignment. The part that is touching the mat is grounding, while the top part is relaxed. </p>
<p>In Shirshasana (Supported Headstand), the forearms and elbows ground, while the feet relaxes. In Tadasana (Mountain Pose), both feet ground while the shoulders and face relax. </p>
<p>I hope you try it one of these days. It’s freeing. It’s the ultimate inversion. The head is below the heart, which gives the heart it’s much needed rest, as Seventy percent of the blood that the heart pumps goes to the brain. </p>

<p>So I started to think that yes, tomorrow is Not promised to us. I Would definitely like to live another day. And another and another… As many days as possible.</p>
<p>I did NOT have my phone in my hand, nor was I paying attention to it at the time. But I Have certainly been guilty of that, in more occasions that I’d care to admit.</p>
<p>Live to see another beautiful day. And even another not so beautiful day. But Live. Live life in the present moment. That’s what the sign reminded me to be. To be PRESENT. To live today. JUST for today. </p>

I trusted that things would take care of themselves. And yes, surely they did. But not without much FEAR of the unknown and the Dangers of being all by myself. But I also knew that there would be great SURPRISES. Great successes. Great knowledge. Great opportunities. </p>

<p>I love my Cruise Control! I started using it, all the time, years ago, After I received yet another speeding ticket. But the other day, I picked up a new leased car, and it didn’t take me long to realize that it has no cruise control. I didn’t think they made cars without cruise control anymore.</p>
<p>I wasn’t sure I would be able to live without it for Years to come (at least 2 years). I have not gotten a speeding ticket since I started using that feature. I felt handicapped. I also felt jipped by my car salesman. </p>
<p>But after a day, I was surprised at how differently I began to see things, without even trying… Maybe I DON’T need it Anymore. Maybe I would be Better off without it. Maybe this is what I need right now. I need to be more present anyway. This will help me be more present on the road. Be present in my life.</p>
<p>I’m sure I’m different now than I was 12 years ago. I’m sure I’m even different now than just 2 years ago. </p>
<p>Meditation creates miracles.</p>
<p>I accept the challenge. I accept the Change. I accept a new Life. I accept a new me.</p>

<p>Here’s another Breathing Meditation technique. I just led a talk and practice on meditation the other day. Everyone was “on the same page”. It was so nice to be a part of it, to be in the middle of it. </p>
<p>In the middle of Mindfulness (if that’s even possible).</p>
<p>Anyway, we started with this simple breathing meditation: count the breath with a 1:1 ratio. For example, inhale 4, exhale 4. Or inhale 5, exhale 5. Choose a length that is comfortable.</p>
<p>We went up to the count of 12. But you can slow down the breath even more at 14 or 20. Or… you can always stay at 4. It just depends on the moment.</p>
<p>You can do this any time to help center and focus the mind.</p>

<p>A student I hadn’t seen in weeks came to class with a shaved head today. I thought she looked great. She had really long hair just a month ago.</p>
<p>I guessed that she had gone to India and did it for religious reasons. And she had, as if an offering to the gods she said — her hair.</p>
<p>I was happy for her.</p>
<p>Then I went on about when I was in India, to teach the yoga teacher training course, how a few of the students, near the end of the course, shaved their heads. </p>
<p>The philosophy of DETACHMENT. It is what you are most attached to, that you should learn to live without.</p>
<p>I spoke to one of the students who shaved their heads, who was the only male (the rest of the students who shaved their heads were female). He said that he was way too attached to his hair. THAT’S how he knew he needed to DETACH.</p>
<p>I’ve always admired that. Though I had never been that attached to my own hair. I figure it’ll grow back. And my hair grows back fast.</p>

<p>Yesterday I talked about migraines and yoga. I couldn’t help but tell all my other classes about it. </p>
<p>One of the postures this yogi specifically mentioned was Matsyasana (Fish posture). She did Not like the posture at all! It was most difficult for her at first, almost impossible. And of course, class after class, she became more and more comfortable with it. She credits the posture to have helped her neck, thus her migraine. (Yes she has had major neck issues as well)</p>
<p>The reason I am writing about this Fish-posture-story is that, oftentimes, it is the Thing that we Avoid, or is difficult to face, that we NEED the most. It is the ONE that will solve our issue, once and for all. </p>
<p>I notice myself doing that for sure. </p>
<p>Why the avoidance? </p>
<p>Is it the Fear of failing? Or the fear of Finally succeeding at solving an issue, therefore having to deal with other issues thereafter?</p>

<p>I just had a student tell me her Migraines are now non-existent since she started taking yoga classes in January. She used to get them 4 to 8 times per month!</p>
<p>I have heard that yoga cures headaches many times before. Heck it cured/cures mine! But it still made me emotional to hear this today. I’m so so glad for her. </p>
<p>She said, especially on rainy days, she would just shut the lights off and lay down. And today, her fiancé was surprised to see her up and moving. </p>
<p>“It’s raining!” he said to her.</p>
<p>“I know!” she replied! </p>
<p>She said that she even Almost lost her last job because of these migraines. </p>
<p>She had mentioned to her fiancé that she didn’t know if she could take care of kids because of these migraines. She couldn’t even take care of their dog with the headache! </p>
<p>It came out of her mouth: Yoga changes your life!</p>

<p>Why Meditation is necessary from the point of view of Medical Science?</p>
<p>It says: From the time of the birth till death the heart works continuously. Everyday the heart pumps 7000 liters of blood, of which 70% blood is pumped to the Brain and the remaining 30% to the rest of body.</p>
<p>How does the heart work so efficiently and effectively ?</p>
<p>Heart works effectively because it follows a discipline. In normal conditions the heart takes 0.3 secs to contract (systole) and 0.5 secs to relax (diastole).</p>
<p>So 0.3+0.5=0.8 secs are required by the heart to complete one beat (1 cardiac cycle). </p>
<p>That means in 1 min, the heart beats 72 times which is considered as normal heart beat. </p>
<p>During the relaxing phase of 0.5 secs the impure blood travels through the lungs and becomes 100 % pure.</p>
<p>In some stressful conditions , the body demands more blood in less time and in this situation the heart reduces the relaxing period of 0.5 secs to 0.4 secs...Thus in this case the heart beats 82 times in 1min and only 80% of blood gets purified. </p>
<p>On more and more demand the relaxing time is further reduced to 0.3 secs & then only 60% of blood is purified.</p>
<p>Imagine the consequences of the lesser Oxygenated blood circulating in our Arteries !</p>
<p>Deep Breathing , is the key to ensure better Oxygenation of the blood.</p>
<p>Factors responsible for the activity of the brain :</p>
<p>1. 25-30% is due to the Diet we consume.</p>
<p>2.70-75% is due to the emotions, attitude,</p>
<p>memories and other processes of the brain.</p>
<p>Thus, to calm the brain and reduce the demand on the heart to pump more and more blood ,</p>
<p>brain needs to be given a rest.</p>
<p>Meditation is the most useful tool to calm an agitated mind.</p>
<p>When we sit with eyes closed and meditate, the brain gets calmer, heart gets rested, thus insulating us from the Diseases of the Heart & Brain.</p>

<p>MEDITATION IS THE KEY TO THE REAL HEALING.</p>

<p>They say that practicing Yoga heightens intuition. They say that thousands of years ago, we didn’t verbally “Speak” to one another. We communicated through our intuition. I truly believe that!</p>
<p>During my yoga teacher training course at the Sivanada Yoga Ashram, when I thought or wished for something to happen, it soon certainly did! Exactly as I had wished.</p>
<p>In the last few days, my intuition has been frighteningly sharp, in both directions.</p>
<p>Friday, as I closed the door to my car, this special lady entered my thoughts. I was wondering whether she had kids, and how many. And just a few seconds later, as I walked into the building, someone called out my name oh so brightly. Guess who it was! And she was with one of her kids!</p>
<p>I then walked a few more feet into a yoga class and decided to get them into a version of child’s pose I’d Never done before. The students were amazed at how they were just talking about that exact pose before I walked in. They only told me After we had finished the posture. They couldn’t stop talking about it. I don’t think they even noticed the coincidence until After the fact.</p>
<p>This afternoon, since this college course is ahead of schedule, I decided to ask them if they wanted to go over anything at all. I wanted to do a restorative type of yoga practice. Guess what! One of the students asked for “Restorative Yoga”!</p>
<p>People call, text, email, as I am thinking of them. One of my very close friends and I were even texting one another AT THE SAME TIME just yesterday!</p>
<p>It’s fun! I am grateful. It really is something else. If we can all just hone our intuition, then maybe this world would be a much kinder space.</p>

<p>In this eye opening workshop, you will learn about the many physical, mental, and energetic benefits and prepare the body and mind to step into the practice. By first establishing a strong, steady foundation, we will move slowly, through the eight steps, honoring each step, with mindfulness and body awareness. Next we will work on fine tuning the Shoulderstand, for a straighter more comfortable pose, working on flexibility of the back side of the body. Come learn why these two asanas are called the King and Queen of postures, and experience it for yourself. Each student will get individual attention.</p>

<p>I co-taught yesterday with a very giving yoga teacher. She’s beautiful. Always learning. Always teaching. Forgiving. Loving. Giving. Cute. Sexy. I can go on and on. Plus she’s 75 years old! </p>
<p>I was in a class with her (we were both students) and she spoke of her previous goal of doing a handstand away from the wall by the time she turned 70. And now that she’s past 70, she’s thinking it will never happen and that’s completely OK. </p>
<p>We can plan so much. We can have many goals. But in the end, life takes us where it needs to go. </p>
<p>My co-teacher may not be doing the handstand free from the wall, but she may also be more content in her daily life. She may be more forgiving now than before she turned 70.</p>
<p>I know I am a different person now than even just one year ago. There is so much we can learn in just one year. </p>
<p>I don’t work on my handstand much nowadays, but I do work on my patience. Acceptance. My breath. Anatomy of the body. Anatomy of the spirit. And lots more.</p>

<p>The note said: “A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the constant pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.”</p>
<p>To think that one of the most brilliant minds said that a Peaceful Mind and a Peaceful Life is the Key to Happiness.</p>
<p>But now, look at how the world thinks “what happiness IS”.</p>
<p>We are constantly bombarded with advertisements. To BUY this or that. That we NEED these things.</p>
<p>That we Should DO this or that.</p>

<p>Over email, I received a video of Rod Stewart’s version of “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” song with Jesus Christ all over the video. This is a more accurate representation of the song as written by Van Morrison.</p>
<p>The song is actually widely considered to be about Van Morrison's relationship with God and religious convictions. Instead of Rod Stewart’s version on romantic love.</p>
<p>It’s amazing how we can turn any thing into “romantic” love. We are obsessed with “eros” love. </p>
<p>My song “Tell Me” — tell me what you want — is often mistaken for eros love. This video was the idea of the director, not mine. I didn’t correct him on his interpretation of the meaning of the song. I figure, if we’re ready to hear, or experience spiritual love, then: we shall experience just that.</p>

<p>When he realized it, he saw God coming closer with a suitcase in his hand.</p>
<p>Dialogue between God and Dead Man:</p>
<p>God: Alright son, it's time to go.</p>

<p>Man: What do you have in that suitcase?</p>

<p>Strength has an enormous effect on Range of Motion. Thus, if you feel muscle tightness, the opposing muscle is most likely weak. </p>
<p>MAT is a systematic approach for Evaluating and Correcting muscular imbalances. These muscular imbalances contribute to injury, impede recovery, and compromise performance. </p>
<p>MAT is a specific and unique process that is used to improve one’s ability to develop efficient muscle contraction(s) as indicated by the measurement and comparison of AROM (active range of motion) symmetry issues on each side of the body. </p>
<p>The MAT process can address hundreds of muscles and joints in order to uncover the muscular issues that could be contributing to the loss of physical performance and associated subjective complaints. </p>
<p>Much like a chiropractor deals with bones, MAT practitioners deal with muscles. Muscles are the prime movers of bones. Joints are secondary.</p>
<p>MAT evaluates the body as a mechanical system and the interrelationship of the joints, prioritizing weakness instead of tightness, as loss of range of motion is viewed as a strength issue. </p>
<p>The body has amazing healing capacities if we just align ourselves with appropriate, well-progressed, individualized movements to stimulate positive change. </p>
<p>I now base my yoga practice, and instructors on this MAT principle. </p>

<p>An uncle sent me this article on Jim Thorpe: </p>
<p>Look closely at the photo, you can see that he's wearing different socks and shoes. This wasn't a fashion statement. It was the 1912 Olympics, and Jim, an American Indian from Oklahoma represented the U.S. in track and field. On the morning of his competitions, his shoes were stolen. Luckily, Jim ended up finding two shoes in a garbage can. That's the pair that he's wearing in the photo. But one of the shoes was too big, so he had to wear an extra sock. Wearing these shoes, Jim won two gold medals that day.</p>
<p>This is a perfect reminder that you don't have to resign to the excuses that have held you back. So what if life hasn't been fair? What are you going to do about it today? Whatever you woke up with this morning; stolen shoes, ill health, failed relationships, don't let it stop you from running your race. You can experience more in life if you'll get over the excuses and get on with living. </p>

<p>Music really is the language of the soul. </p>
<p>“Hear Me Roar” was a celebration of women in Classical music.</p>
<p>Chicago Sinfonietta honored diversity and women at their concert today by playing musical compositions written by women.</p>
<p>Its musical director, Mei-Ann Chen, voiced that, only, less than 2 percent of music programmed by major U.S. orchestras were written by women. </p>
<p>“Now let’s think about that for a second… That’s less that milk!” </p>
<p>The audience laughed. But why is that? Because yesterday’s pieces alone, (#metoo was a debut) were mesmerizing. </p>
<p>Why aren’t women being heard?</p>
<p>Dora Pejacevic, may be the musical director’s favorite composers of all time, but was Not recognized as a woman. They only used her initials when they publicly reviewed her compositions. She wrote over one hundred symphonies before she passed in her 30’s.</p>
<p>Thank you to these women who used their talent.</p>
<p>Let’s not downplay our talent(s). Use them as these women did so beautifully. </p>

<p>I soon realized that she seemed to be looking to PERFECT her posture AT THAT EXACT TIME.</p>
<p>You cannot expect to come to class and do it perfectly. It takes a LIFETIME.</p>
<p>The only secret to yoga is: PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE.</p>

<p>I just came from a funeral of a wonderful 94 year-old woman. She had SIXTEEN children! Some might see that as a long life. But even after 94 years, it is STILL not long enough! Her grandkids got to know her closely and will remember her dearly. But again… they could still use more days with her. More of her Smile. More of her Care. More of her Love. </p>

<p>I read an old ‘daily pages’ entry of mine, written back in November of 1998. </p>
<p>It started: My life is as phenomenal as can be and I am so perfect. I’m so happy… I love you so so much God. Thank you for everything.</p>
<p>I thought: Did my old-self just inspire me? Did my old-self know more than I do now? </p>
<p>And NO, I did NOT have everything. I was a struggling actress/musician. So I didn’t have plenty of money, and if I did, I had to spend it on acting classes and singing lessons. I did Not have the perfect job, not yet. I was not even ‘in love’ or with a partner. So what made me write those words? Because these “daily pages” were certainly PRIVATE. They’re for my eyes only. They were just a way to explore my thoughts and feelings. So I was Not trying to impress anyone. I was being TRUTHFUL.</p>
<p>It’s true. We should all wake up and KNOW that our lives are phenomenal! And WE ARE PERFECT! And yes, BE GRATEFUL.</p>

<p>As a yoga instructor, I am not interested in how strong your arms are. Whether you could do the headstand or the full splits. How long you could hold your Warrior 3. </p>
<p>I am more interested in how slowly you could exhale. How deeply you could LET Go and relax (body And mind) in shavasana (corpse pose / relaxation pose). </p>
<p>I am interested in AHIMSA (non-violence / non-harming) towards others of course, but also toward Ourselves. </p>
<p>Non-violence / non-harming, not just in thoughts and words, but in action, to our own body. </p>
<p>Be kind to your limbs. Move carefully, as to Not harm.</p>
<p>THAT is yoga.</p>

<p>I had a mother and daughter come to yoga class. It was the daughter’s first yoga class, ever. The mother admitted that she was “in and out”. </p>
<p>Soon after we got on our feet, I felt a lot of pressure to “work” them out. </p>
<p>The rest of the students were regular practitioners, and so they knew not to take their tadasana (mountain pose) for granted. </p>
<p>The rest of the class closed their eyes as instructed. Grounded their feet from toes to heels. Relaxed their shoulders, face. But the mother and her daughter continued to look at me. Waiting. Just waiting… to BEGIN.</p>
<p>We are ALREADY in yoga. </p>
<p>“Stay Right Here with me. In the PRESENT”, I requested once more. </p>
<p>I continued: Yoga is being in the Present Moment… It’s tough… I know… We tend to live in the Future… One day ahead… Hours ahead… Or in the Past… Be HERE. Right now. Not 2 seconds before… Not 2 seconds after… Not even a half a second before… or a half a second after… Be. Here. Now. Body. Mind. Spirit Connection. THAT is yoga. </p>
<p>I continued some more. Until finally — they stopped. And STAYED in the moment.</p>

<p>I just renewed my CPR / AED certification. </p>
<p>They say that MEN, when they start to feel BAD (as in a heart attack), walk away from people. They prefer to die alone. For example, if they are having dinner at a restaurant, when they start to feel a heart attack, they will rush to the bathroom. Therefore, there is no chance to do CPR on them.</p>
<p>Watch out for someone rushing to go to the bathroom.</p>

<p>Oh shucks! I just got home and just realized that I overbooked myself today that I missed a talk by Dr. Steven Frankel: How Plants Are Better at Just About Everything than Humans. </p>
<p>He says that, “Humans think we are better than plants, mostly because we know that plants cannot move about. However, the lack of movement has caused plants to compensate by becoming really good at just about everything.”</p>
<p>The talk looked at how plants are better at all sorts of things including extreme living, working with others, changing the planet and even enslaving the human race to their will. </p>

<p>“How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive colleague ruin your day?</p>
<p>Of course, for an instant you will probably be set back on your heels.</p>
<p>However, the mark of a happy & successful person is how quickly one can get one's focus back to what is important.</p>
<p>I learned it in the back of a London black cab. Here's what happened.</p>
<p>I hopped in a taxi at the Bank and we took off for Moorgate tube Station. We had been driving about 200 yards when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!*</p>
<p>What happened next: The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and instead of apologizing, started yelling bad words at us. </p>
<p>Now, what took me by surprise was: Instead of getting angry or annoyed, my taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. He was actually friendly towards the other man.</p>
<p>I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, 'The Law of the Rubbish Bins.'*</p>
<p>Many people are like rubbish bins. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their bin piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they will dump it straight on you.</p>
<p>When someone wants to dump on you, do not take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.</p>
<p>So this was it: The 'Law of the Rubbish Bins’.”</p>
<p>How often do we let 'Rubbish Bins' Run right over us? How often do we Take their rubbish and Spread it to other people: at home, at work, on the streets?</p>
<p>Become aware of Rubbish Bins. See the load they are carrying. See them coming to drop it off. </p>
<p>With the grace of God, I have learned just to smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Sometimes we don’t have that much time. All we have time for is to react. Try not to add to the Rubbish Bin.</p>

<p>Lent started on Wednesday, also known as Ash Wednesday. It is 6 weeks of self-discipline (or repentance) before Easter Sunday (Christ’s Resurrection). </p>
<p>During Lent, observants practice moderation, fasting, and self-denial.</p>
<p>I gave up chocolate once for Lent and it went on for 3 more years. Imagine that! No chocolate for 3 years! Now, of course, my home is always stocked. I sometimes even eat my oatmeal with chocolate chips, and LOTS of it. It’s more like having oatmeal with my chocolate chips (vegan of course, since I’m dairy-free). </p>
<p>Since then, I’ve done juice fast and such. For other reasons than self-denial.</p>
<p>Now I’m not into dieting. I Never diet. But I do cherish those moments of self-discipline. They Have changed my relationship with food. I don’t reach for food to comfort me anymore. I don’t much reach for anything but the Silence WithIn — whatever that might bring. </p>
<p>I don’t much deny myself of suffering, for it doesn’t last. Nothing lasts. Life is made up of an abundance of everything.</p>

<p>I was born in the Philippines and people there eat with their hands (use their fingers) often. My aunt, who lived with us in Chicago, used her hands at home to eat all-the-time. </p>
<p>I eat with my fingers sometimes. I love it. </p>
<p>So when I was in India in 2014, using my hands to eat felt freeing. </p>
<p>It felt home, or complete when eating with my fingers. </p>
<p>In India, they talk about PRANA. Life Force.</p>
<p>They compare eating with utensils (which doesn’t have Prana or Life) versus eating with your hands (which have Prana or Life). Food coming from something that has Prana as opposed to food coming from something with NO Prana.</p>
<p>Scientifically, here are some benefits of eating food with our own hands:</p>
<p>1. Hands touching food will give strength to the body and mind (where millions of nerves send the signal to the brain.</p>
<p>2. When we touch the food with our fingers, brain signals the stomach so that proper digestive juices and enzymes are produced.</p>
<p>3. It ensures mindfulness and greater concentration. </p>
<p>4. Metal reacts with oil and food looses its taste. </p>
<p>5. When you mix food with our fingers, that ensures proper blood circulation.</p>
<p>6. The moment our fingers touch the lips, it produces saliva in the mouth.</p>
<p>7. Each finger in the hand has different characteristics:</p>
<p>Thumb: represents fire</p>
<p>Index Finger: air</p>
<p>Middle finger : Space (sky)</p>
<p>Ring finger : Earth</p>
<p>Small finger : water</p>
<p>When these fingers touch our food, LIFE forces will be activated in the body.</p>

<p>I got stuck several times in the snow today. </p>
<p>I now drive a little SUV, since my Chevrolet Volt had a habit of getting stuck at parking spaces during wintertime.</p>
<p>The first time I got stuck was in the Very beginning of a left turn into a wide street, perpendicular to a very busy road. I was coming out of a big parking lot of a major fitness chain. I say all this because it was completely unexpected. It was already 10 in the morning, but, I suppose, the plow trucks hadn’t gotten to it yet. </p>
<p>It was a good thing that there were no cars around me. That most people had stayed home that morning. It took a few tries, but I didn’t have to get out of my car to get unstuck. </p>
<p>I then stopped at a store. It was tough choosing a parking space since the plow trucks had, again, not gotten to that area yet. </p>
<p>I wasn’t in the store for more than 10 minutes. I then got stuck finding my way out of there. I thought I could wiggle my way out, but to no avail. I got out of my car to free up my tires. I noticed a plow truck nearby and he came towards me. He informed me that he would plow a path in front of my car so I can drive forward. After a few tries, I went on. </p>
<p>Then on that same parking property, while making a right turn at the light, I was, once again, stuck. It took a few tries to get going. A few was about seven tries. </p>
<p>The consolation prize to being stuck is that, we have no choice but to drive oh-so-carefully: We become very giving drivers. </p>
<p>Being in the middle of a snow storm, especially while stuck, and no choice but to stay put, is serene.</p>
<p>I became present. ALIVE.</p>

<p>Maybe I should be talking about the snow fall in Illinois. How terrible it was to be right in the middle of it — driving. </p>
<p>Yesterday, I was 25 minutes late for a 50-minute yoga class. A drive which usually takes a half an hour, took me an hour and a half. The other colleges all around the area closed early, but not mine. </p>
<p>At 5 this morning, while driving to my first class, I thought the snow would have been all cleared away, but it was not. I think the temperature outside was too cold to be efficient. </p>
<p>But I love Chicago winters. I do! They are serene. It makes life interesting. And snow… is just so beautiful when fresh. </p>
<p>Yes it’s dangerous in more ways than one. But it’s also nurturing.</p>
<p>Yes it’s bothersome. But it also saves lives.</p>
<p>Yes it adds the work of scraping car windshields. But it also adds the color of purity in the eyes of the beholder.</p>
<p>Yes it’s freezing. But it also makes summertime, spring, and fall, that much more appreciated.</p>
<p>Yes it’s frightening. But it’s also HOME.</p>

<p>I was telling my retired yoga students today how I’d been freezing all morning. How the rooms I had been teaching in were freezing (including the current one), and that it had gotten me internally cold. </p>
<p>A student who comes only once in a while replied, “You need a bed buddy!” </p>
<p><em>Oh dear! </em></p>
<p>I figured he was joking because he’s been such a respectable person and student in the past that I didn’t, AT ALL, take it the wrong way. No, not from him. </p>
<p>I answered, “Yea that’s not hard these days.”</p>
<p>I was thinking of how internet dating has made it so easy for men (and women) to date (therefore sleep around). </p>
<p>Then we (the rest of the students and I), soon realized, he was talking about the “Bed Buddy Body Wrap” that you can purchase from a local store for $9.99. This student (who I appreciate even more after this incident / mishap) who is well in his 70’s and suffers from much physical pain, began to describe it… and how it makes his hips “feel so much better”. </p>
<p>Oh, I just had to act like I knew what he was talking about all that time. I think we all did.</p>

<p>I just looove seeing the results / effects of Alternate Nostril breathing (Anuloma Viloma)! </p>
<p>We did it today during Restorative Yoga. Immediately, you see the effects. </p>
<p>I personally begin to yawn when I haven’t done it in awhile. It’s my body’s way of detoxing. I saw a few yogis earlier who did just that. But the most telling effect is when people remain seated for a long period of time, unable to move. </p>
<p>Breathing in through the LEFT nostril, then breathing the same air out through the RIGHT nostril. Breathing again through the RIGHT nostril, then breathing out throughout the LEFT, balances the LEFT AND THE RIGHT hemispheres of the brain. And it definitely CALMS the mind (easily into meditation).</p>
<p>I witnessed this today. It was beautiful.</p>

<p>I’m reading <em>90 Days of God’s Goodness</em> by Randy Alcorn. He mainly speaks of major tragedies, ones we often only witness from the sidelines — making the news. </p>
<p>These individuals find themselves with deeper faith in God. HOW do they find Light after Darkness? </p>
<p>They believe in the God “Who knows the End from the Beginning”. Because even though we don’t know what lies ahead, the Imperial God does.</p>
<p>“Our own knowledge is remarkably small,” he says. “God’s is infinitely great.” </p>
<p>There is nothing He does not know. Therefore nothing can take Him by surprise. Nothing can spoil His plans. Nothing can thwart His promises.</p>
<p>One of the sufferers said, “I’m here to tell you, I would not have the relationship with God that I have, if I had not suffered deeply. God revealed treasures to me that could only be found, I believe, in the darkness.”</p>
<p>When I was in 6th grade, one of my classmates and his family (mom, dad, older sister, older brother) were hit by a drunk driver. All of his family died instantly. He was in critical condition for awhile, but lived. </p>
<p>I CANNOT even imagine what he went through (or is still going through). The whole school was devastated. We all knew the family — they were outstanding. Beautiful — inside and out. </p>
<p>He did come back to school when he got better. I never really got to say much to him. I mean, what do you even say? I may be better equipped now as an adult, but I was 12 -years-old and I had never been that close to anyone losing his Entire family all at the same time.</p>
<p>How does one keep their Faith? How does one begin to be grateful? How does one even Live or Breath — never mind breathing Deeply? </p>
<p>Trust. </p>
<p>Faith.</p>
<p>“When people lose their faith because of suffering, it suggests a weak or nominal faith. It didn’t account for or prepare them for evil and suffering. Any faith not based on the Truth needs to be lost, the sooner the better. Suffering and evil exerts a force that either pushes us away from God or pulls us toward him. But if personal suffering gives sufficient evidence that God doesn’t exist, then surely I shouldn’t wait until I Suffer to conclude He’s a myth. If my suffering would, one day, justify denying God, then I should deny him Now, in light of other people’s suffering.</p>

<p>Yesterday morning I left my house without my phone. Luckily, I use my phone for everything — directions, taking notes, calculator, calendar, guitar tuner, music, audio books, voice memo, meditation, camera, etc. So I noticed it soon after I drove off. Otherwise I would have been without it all-day-long — from early morning until the late evening.</p>
<p>Today, it took me at least 2 hours to notice that my phone was missing. Luckily I needed traffic information before driving off from work. </p>
<p>I had NO idea where and when I last used it.</p>
<p>The cleaning lady found it! </p>
<p>One of my friends tried to help me find it by calling it, but — I hardly have my ringer on. So calling my phone is pretty useless.</p>
<p>AT&T seems to be forcing me to buy a new phone because it hasn’t been working very well. And because of this, I was not too worried about not finding it. Though I would still be lost without anyone’s phone number and email address, and much much more.</p>
<p>I am glad I am not tied to my phone. I often leave it in the car or at home.</p>
<p>When I’m out with friends, unless I have another appointment after, there is no way I would even think about using my phone.</p>
<p>I have a friend who bans his family from bringing their phone inside a restaurant.</p>
<p>Also I think CALL your friends and family, instead of texting. Hear their voice. Take in their love. GIVE love. Via voice conversation.</p>
<p>Try to detach from your phone. Try harder. There’s so much beauty right in from of you.</p>
